DEFERRAL OF PAYMENTS - AMERICAN MODERN
In response to the recent severe flooding in the Midwest, the Department of Insurance in Iowa has issued directives to insurance companies doing business in that state to help provide safeguards for consumers in affected counties. The flooding has caused many people to experience disruption of mail delivery and displacement from their residences, businesses, and other properties.

In order to comply with these directives, American Modern is doing the following
(all lines of business).

Iowa - Moratorium Period 06/12/08 - 06/30/08
  • Systematic block of cancellation notices.
  • Systematic block of physical cancellation (lapses for non-payment.
  • Extended auto-reinstatement period (any payment made on a policy that was cancelled for nonpayment of premium will auto-reinstate the policy with no lapse in coverages).
  • Bills issued during the moratorium period have until 08/30/08 to be paid.
  • A memo will be put on each policy in the affected counties indicating that this policyholder may have been part of the flooding and that consideration should be given to reinstatement of the policy.
Iowa counties affected: Adair, Adams, Allamakee, Appanoose, Audubon, Benton, Blackhawk, Boone, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Carroll, Cass, Cedar, Cerro Gordo, Chickasaw, Clarke, Clayton, Crawford, Clinton, Dallas, Delaware, Dubuque, Davis, Decatur, Des Moines, Fayette, Floyd, Franklin, Fremont, Greene, Grundy, Guthrie, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardin, Harrison, Howard, Humboldt, Henry, Iowa, Jackson, Jasper, Johnson, Jones, Jefferson, Keokuk, Kossuth, Lee, Linn, Louisa, Lucas, Marion, Marshall, Mitchell, Monona, Montgomery, Muscatine, Mahaska, Madison, Mills, Monroe, Page, Polk, Pottawattamie, Poweshiek, Ringgold, Scott, Story, Shelby, Tama, Union, Van Buren, Wapello, Warren, Webster, Winneshiek, Worth, Wright, Washington, Wayne and Winnebago.

We will keep you updated with additional information as it becomes available. In the meantime, if you have a questions, please contact Customer Care at 1-800-543-2644.

AMERICAN RELIABLE ANNOUNCES NEW 7-DAY GRACE PERIOD

As a result of our continuing efforts to meet your needs, American Reliable is pleased to announce a new 7-day grace period for policies billed in our MAX billing system.

  1. GRACE PERIOD FOR ALL RENEWALS. Payments are due on the due dates. State law requires an insurer to give an insured a state mandated "grace period" to pay their premium after the renewal invoice due date (14 days is common in most states). That period is the time between the print date and the due date that is displayed in our letter notice cycle.
    • Effective July 25,2008, American Reliable will allow an additional 7 calendar days beyond the stated grace period in which the Company will accept payments received without necessitating a rewrite of coverage.
    • NOTE: We must have the payment in our hands - no exceptions. Thereafter, a rewrite of the policy is required. Consequently, the insured now has 21 days from the due date (using the 14 day example) to remit the premium payment to the company.
    • If the insured cannot mail the payment and assure the company receives it before the end of this 21-day period, we suggest they immediately call our Customer Service department at 800.535.1333 to pay by Visa or Mastercard. Our credit card payment process is professional, safe, and easy to use.
  2. GRACE PERIOD FOR ALL INSTALLMENT BILLS. For these also, the payments are due on the notice due dates. Currently, if a payment is not postmarked before the cancellation notice due date, the policy would be canceled upon the cancellation due date.
    • Effective July 25,2008, American Reliable will allow an additional 7 calendar days, inclusive of the cancellation due date, in which the premium payment can be received by the company and the cancellation will be rescinded. Thereafter, the policy will need to be rewritten.
    • Please encourage our insureds to use the credit card payment process whenever needed.
We will continue to accept payments postmarked prior to the original cancellation due date regardless of the dates they are received in our office or our lockbox.
